SIMM adapter for replacing lower memory

This is an english version of an article I wrote at the Speccy.org forum. Describes a method to replace the lower memory bank in a Spectrum with a SIMM module. The same technique can be applied to the 32K upper memory bank, or even to both 64K banks in a Spectrum 128K model.

Want to support this and other upcoming projects? I need only one euro from you. That's all. Thank you very much!

One, if not the most, common problem with the ZX Spectrum is related to the lower memory. That is, the eight 16Kbit chips along the bottom of the PCB. Unlike the 32K extension, this lower memory, that comprises addresses 4000h to 7FFFh in the processor address space, is made from 4116-type DRAM chips.

Some years ago, I read from a MSX project to use SIMM modules to replace/extend the RAM in these machines. Some posts on the speccy.org forum about damaged Spectrums led me to reconsider that hack.

I have an, as I call it, all-socketed Spectrum, I mean, a standard issue 3B Spectrum, but with CPU, EOM, upper and lower memory, ULA, and some logic chips, all socketed. So, in the event of a hardware failure, I can replace the damaged component in seconds. For that reason, this Spectrum is the one I usually have for testing new hardware projects.

But perharps not usefull for everybody, as space is very limited on the Spectrum case. Event worse if we consider the rubber key model case. Anyway, if you have a Plus cabinet, or better, a DKTronics keyboard, please, read on.
